Undergraduate Students

Undergrads in the lab include volunteers, independent study students, honours students, research assistants, and exchange students. Undergraduates' primary responsibilities in the lab are:

  • Practice science according to ethical guidelines and best scientific practices

  • Follow lab protocols and rules

  • Check in regularly with the person supervising you

  • Be responsible and professional:

    • show up on time

    • when testing participants, dress and act in a professional manner (this doesn't mean you need to dress "up", but as the face of the lab you shouldn't look sloppy)

    • let people know if you can't make it to a meeting or testing session

    • let people supervising you know if you're having life problems that are interfering with your school/lab work

Learning outcomes of working in NCIL include:

  • Learn the practice of science, and specifically the type of cognitive neuroscience we do in NCIL

    • Develop skills in research methods

    • Understand and perform best scientific practices

  • Learn about a particular topic area

  • Learn and practice research ethics

  • Learn to work collaboratively

  • Learn to communicate science through

    • Scientific writing

    • Speaking to scientific audiences

    • (ideally) speaking to non-scientific audiences
