😓PhD Dissertation

If you've found yourself in this section you are probably on your journey to complete a PhD (or looking to do a PhD in the future!). Here is some potentially useful information.

Step 1: Review the Graduate Student Handbook. This document can be found online or by reaching out to the administrative staff of your department.

Step 2: Make a plan that includes a timeline for when you will meet each expectation of the program. (Things to include: Classes, Comps, Dissertation Projects, Funding, TA requirements, and other deadlines)

Step 3: Develop a committee meeting. This should be done with the support of your supervisor, as they will have recommendations and suggestions for who may be a good candidate. They will likely also have a wide range of connections from within and outside of your current institution.

What you can expect from a PhD

A PhD can provide you with much more flexibility in your day-to-day life due to a decreased class requirement. But in place of classwork, you will be heavily involved in a wide range of research projects, likely consuming most of your waking hours. A PhD is a much more self-paced program that will require you to set your own deadlines to keep yourself on track. At this stage, you will be in charge of several projects, leading them to completion and managing them and others working on the project. Your individual experience of a PhD may vary dramatically from others even in similar programs or fields depending on the context of the labs your work with and the individual projects and responsibilities you have on the go at any given time.

Funding

There is an expectation that you apply for funding sources where eligible. Your lab and department likely will aid you financially, but applying for funding is still a requirement. There are many online resources for discovering and applying for funding. One of the best resources is to reach out to the administrative staff of your department or your supervisor. See Money>Funding section for more information
