Undergraduate Research Awards

NSERC USRA and other Science Summer Research Awards for Undergraduates in Psych/Neuro

These awards allow undergraduate students to participate in a Dalhousie research lab in the summer and receive paid employment for 16 weeks . The deadline for the award is usually in late January every year (in 2019, the deadline was January 18th). One application to the department of Psych/Neuro (and hence the science department) will allow for the undergraduate applicant to be eligible for all of the summer research awards. To apply, the first and most important step is to find a potential supervisor whose work you are interested in. Once you have read some papers published by the potential supervisor/professor and have gained further interest and insight into the type of research they do, the next step is to contact the professor to meet and discuss your interest in the their work and if they would be willing to have you in their lab in the summer under a summer research award. If they say yes, you are ready to start Dalhousie's "Faculty of Science Undergraduate Summer Research Award: Application Form." I have attached the 2019 application form below so that you can get an idea of what the application form will look like.

In the application form, there are two sections: Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 is to be completed by the student, and Part 2 is to be completed by the potential supervisor. Make sure to complete Part 1 before handing the application form to the supervisor. Once completed, hand in the application form to the Psych/Neuro department coordinator (in 2019, the coordinator was Dr. Sophie Jacques: sophie.jacques@dal.ca).

If you are a Dalhousie student, submission of a transcript is not needed as the school will have access to your grades through your B00#. To be eligible to apply for the USRA's, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.7 is required and, at least 2 years of university study must be completed.

For more information and specific details, you can look at the 2019 guidelines attached below.
